Adult Training

The Denver Area Council web page on adult training can be found here, which describes in detail the training requirements and provides links to online training and upcoming classroom training. A summary of basic requirements follows:

Youth Protection Training. Youth Protection training is required for all leaders who have direct contact with youth. At all times, youth safety is the number one priority. At the same time, adults need to know the rules for keeping themselves safe, too. Comprehensive Youth Protection training teaches all the do’s and don’ts of working with youth. The training is offered through the Online Learning Center, or it may be taken as part of a district or council training course.

Fast Start Training. Fast Start training is the first step for all new leaders and should be taken immediately after they register and before they meet with any youth members. New leaders choose the Fast Start they need to take: Cub Scout Leader, Boy Scout Leader, Varsity Scout Leader, or Venturing Crew Leader. All Fast Start courses are available on DVD, or they can be completed through the Online Learning Center. (If you are new to Scouting, you will be asked to create an account.)

Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters are considered trained when they have completed New Leader Essentials (Fast Start), Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills. As these leaders are the first contact, we also encourage CPR and First Aid.
  • Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training: Leader specific includes three sessions designed to provide leaders with a good working knowledge of Troop Operation. Offered at the District level.
  • Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills: Weekend training focused at improving leaders outdoor skills, as well as being fun and helpful in building morale. This training is offered several times a year.
Troop Committee members are considered trained when they have completed New Leader Essentials (Fast Start) and the Troop Committee Challenge as their Leader Specific Training.
  • Troop Committee Challenge (Online): This course is designed to help Troop Committee members better understand their roles and responsibilities through interactive learning.
